Assalamualaikum My Beloved Friend..
Welcome to my blog:)
Today i will share to you all about "SYNTAX in Linguistics". Lets start..
Syntax is the part of linguistics that studies the structure and formation of sentences. It explains how words and phrases are arranged to form correct sentences. A sentence could make no sense and still be correct from the syntax point of view as long as words are in their appropriate spots and agree with each other.
Subject/predicate: All sentences are about something or someone. The something or someone that the sentence is about is called the subject of the sentence. In the following sentences the subjects are shown in blue. Note how the subject is often, but not always, the first thing in the sentence.
- John often comes late to class.
- My friend and I both have a dog named Spot.
- Many parts of the Asian coastline were destroyed by a tsunami in 2004.
- The old hotel at the end of the street is going to be knocked down to make way for a new supermarket
The predicate contains information about the someone or something that is the subject. The example sentences above are shown again, this time with the predicate marked in green.
- John often comes late to class.
My friend and I both have a dog named Spot. - Many parts of the Asian coastline were destroyed by a tsunami in 2004.
- The old hotel at the end of the street is going to be knocked down to make way for a new supermarket.
Simple subject/predicate: As you can see from the example sentences above both the subject and the predicate can consist of many words. The simple subject is the main word in the subject, and the simple predicate is the mainword in the predicate. The simple subject is always a noun/pronoun and the simple predicate is always a verb.
In the following sentences the simple subject is shown in blue and the simple predicate is shown in green.
- My English teacher speaks a little Russian.
- The young girl with the long black hair fell from her bike yesterday in heavy rain.
- At the back of the line in the cafeteria yesterday was a large brown dog with a yellow collar around its neck!
Okay, this is enough about SYNTAX. See you and Bye-bye..
i see that syntax same as grammar. it talk about structure. so what is the different bertween them?
ReplyDeleteOne part of grammar is called Morphology. It has to do with the internal economy of words. So a word like bookkeepers has four morphemes (book, keep, -er, -s) and is put together with morphology. English doesn't have nearly as much morphology as most European languages; Russian grammar, for instance, has much more morphology than syntax. Russian is a synthetic (inflected) language.
DeleteThe other part is called Syntax. It has to do with the external economy of words, including word order, agreement; like the sentence For me to call her sister would be a bad idea and its syntactic transform It would be a bad idea for me to call her sister. That's syntax. English grammar is mostly syntax. English is an analytic(uninflected) language.
Hi Putri, is there any types of predicate? If yes, please explain it and give examples
ReplyDeleteyes, it is.
Delete1. The simple Predicate is a verb in some tense, voice, person, number and mood.
I've been waiting for you for two hours.
2. The Compound Nominal Predicate consists of a link-verb and a predicative (the nominal part) which can be expressed with different parts of speech.
She is an actress.
We are four.
She is pretty.
That is me.
The news was terrifying. (PI)
He was drunk. (PII)
Our aim is to find him. (Infinitive)
My hobby is collecting stamps. (Gerund)
The Nominal part of the Predicate is the Predicative.
3. The Compound Verbal Modal Predicate consists of a modal verb plus the Infinitive. (I think...)
You should have told me about it yesterday.
There is a Compound Verbal Modal Predicate of special type. It is a Compound Verbal Modal Predicate without a modal verb:
He is sure to be waiting for us.
4. The Compound Verbal Aspect Predicate consists of a verb denoting the beginning, the continuation or the end of the action plus the Infinitive or the Gerund.
She began to cry.
She began crying.
why called simple predicate, give me a reason from expert and according you
ReplyDeleteBecause the predicate says something about subject
Deletebecause, predicate explain an action taken by the subject(Van Gerdelen, 2002:61). so, i think the predicate says something about subject.
Your material is very little
ReplyDeletethankyou nelia, i will try about tall material. tomorrow wkwk
DeleteYour blog is like a park many flowers,my eyes sick look it.hahahahahha you alay 😂

subjek: the veterinarian
predicate: examined all the tigers
Thank you, I get some informations from your blog. It will be better if you add your own conclusion.
ReplyDeleteThankyou, maybe another time i will add my own conclusion.
DeleteWhat is the different coumpond noun and adj+noun?
ReplyDeleteCompound nouns are used if there is a standard form. grouping.
DeleteIf Adj + noun (Adj phrase) is used when Adj explains nouns, it not grouping
unity. Example:
Girlfriend: Being 1 word, meaning pacar.
Female friends: Still 2 words, women explain teman wanita
Hai, nice blog... But it will better if you put the contents into points and make it look more arranger than it.
ReplyDeletethankyou
DeleteIn paseo tissue, the writing is 50 sheets x 2 ply ... Why aren't 2 plies?
ReplyDeleteSo when you want to use a noun as adjective, there is no plural form allowed. For example: I am 22 years old, I am a 22 year-old girl (year, as a noun acts as an adjective that forms a noun phrase) . Likewise with other tissues (it seems not only paseo). 50 sheets, sheets as nouns, so plural (add -s). Adjective 2-ply modifying noun sheets. The general form is like this: 2-ply sheet (2 layer tissue paper)
DeleteYour blog is flat, so many flower like kindergarten
ReplyDeleteso, so what should I do so as not like kindergarten?
Deletethis is very helpful. but your article is very simple.
ReplyDeletethenkyou, tomorrow i will make amazing article. so that, make my article simple
DeletePlease give me example about sentences S P O K like indonesia
ReplyDeleteMy mother is cooking chicken soup in the kitchen now.
DeleteMy mother = subject
is cooking = predicate
chicken soup = object
in the kitchen = adverb of place
now = adverb of time
too many flowers, like children
ReplyDeletethankyou, so how to look like "mature"?
DeleteI have question:In the sentence "I'm badly missing him", badly means very. Can we use badly to express "we did it badly" where badly here means "not well"??
ReplyDeleteSo, if you use badly to describe quality, it'll mean "not well". Like: She smelled badly since she had cold. (Quality of her smell sense)When it describes the quantity (how much),it means "very much". As in need badly, want badly, etc. She misses you so badly. (how much she misses you).
DeleteHmmm... here is a note for you.
ReplyDeleteYou need to complete your syntax information.
Thanks.
thankyou another time i will complete abput information.
DeleteSo, what's the difference when use this Syntax and use Present Tense?
ReplyDeleteThe present tense is used to talk about the present and to talk about the future.
DeleteWhile, the syntaxs syntax is the set of rules, principles, and processes that govern the structure of sentences (sentence structure) in a given language, usually including word order.
Your blog its not complete for make me understand
