  2. Hi putri .. U said that Connotation
Is secondary meaning of the word associated to your emotion ... My question is.. How can we understand that a sentence is a connotation or not? What is the characteristic ..

    1. Hai sist, I will try for answer. The connotation is very easy to recognize because connotation is not the real meaning. The connotative meaning is the meaning that does not directly indicate the things, objects, or they mean, usually containing the value of taste, memory, and interpretation of other objects, the use of non-actual meanings which are generally satirical and are denotations meaning that it has increased. For example:He’s such a dog.” – In this sense, the word dog connotes shamelessness, or ugliness.
      Thankyou..

  3. Does each synonym have the exact same meaning or not ? Explain and give an example ?

    1. Hello novia, yes it does. A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another lexeme (word or phrase) in the same language. Words that are synonyms are said to be synonymous, and the state of being a synonym is called synonymy. For example, the words begin, start, commence, and initiate are all synonyms of one another.

  4. Hi Putri, how do we know if a word has denotation and connotation meaning? Does every word has connotation meaning as well?

    1. hello mutia, its easy for things. That must be understood is to recognize denotative meaning and connotative meaning. Denotative meaning is meaning that refers to the true meaning. The connotative meaning is the meaning that arises because it has a sense of value. This feeling of value can be positive, beautiful, honorable, high funny, holy, or pleasant; can also be negative as bad, uncivilized, despicable, low, rude, dirty, pornographic, or frightening.no, it doesn't. Every word must have denotative meaning, but not every word has connotative meaning.

    1. 1. For connotation :
“He’s such a dog.” – In this sense, the word dog connotes shamelessness, or ugliness.
“That woman is a dove at heart.” – Here, the dove implies peace or gentility.
“There’s no place like home.” – While home may refer to the actual building someone lives in, connotatively, it most often refers to family, comfort, and security.
“What do you expect from a politician?” – Politician has a negative connotation of wickedness and insincerity. To imply sincerity, the word statesperson might be used.
      2. For denotation :
a home is “a shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household,”
      3. For social meaning:
      - please, be quiet! ( polite)
      - shut up! ( not polite)

  9. Give me 10 example for denotation and connotation

    1. DENOTATION:
      1. Bear - Teaches people to fish and pick berries
      2. Eagle - Rules the sky and can transform into a human
      3. Frog - Brings wealth
      4. Killer Whale - Honored as being strong and brave
      5. Otter - Denotes laughter and empathy
      6. Owl - Denotes souls of the dead
      7. Salmon - Denotes determination and instinct
      8. Raven - A trickster, curious and mischievous
      9. Sea Turtle - Mother Earth
      10. Thunderbird - Mythological bird that creates thunder and lightning

      CONNOTATION:
      1. Dove – A dove typically implies peace and humility, which is why it has been a commonly-used symbol for anything that represents purity.
      2. Youthful – Saying that a person is youthful as an alternative to the word childish is an implication that he or she is full of life and energy. This is because being childish can sometimes be associated with immaturity, portraying a negative connotation instead.
      3. Slim – Thin is considered to be a neutral connotation. To make it positive, its synonym, slim, can take its place. With the human body being a sensitive topic to take on, using positive connotations is considered to be more acceptable to society.
      4. Mom and Dad – When used in place of mother and father, mom and dad simply connote loving parents. This is because it suggests a close bond between the speaker and the subjects being mentioned, considering how a mother and father can sometimes be seen as mere family figures than actual human beings.
      5. Challenging – Saying that something is difficult to do can often portray negativity, as it shows an emotional frustration towards what is being referred to. But if you describe it as challenging, then it reflects your positive attitude despite the trials that may come.
      6. Retarded – Without giving much thought to the word, this would refer to a mentally-disabled individual. However, the meaning of such word has already lost its natural essence. This is due to how it has been used as an insult towards certain individuals and can be considered as too offensive for most people.
      7. Pushy – When we refer to a person as being too pushy, it implies that we have a high level of annoyance against them. Pushy is synonymous with being aggressive and forceful. When used in a sentence, it becomes a negative connotation. You may also see the examples of symbolism in poetry.
      8. Babe – If taken literally, this is short for baby. But informally speaking, the word “babe” is considered to be a pet name used to address an individual that one is in a sexual or romantic relationship with. It portrays affection, but it has also become a subject of sexual harassment issues in the past decade, gaining a negative reputation over time.
      9. Chicken – We may know this as a dish that goes great with ketchup or gravy, but being chicken can also imply something else. This is often associated with cowardly actions and behavior portrayed by a particular individual.
      10. Childish – If youthful is a positive connotation, then childish would be its exact opposite. Being childish shows how low one’s level of maturity can be, which is relatively inappropriate for the individual’s age and personality.

  16. Why must we learn about semantics? is that important for our life? Please give me the reasons by the expert.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think semantics is very interesting. Wallace L Chafe (in Aminuddin, 2001: 8) reveals that thinking about language, actually at the same time also involves meaning. This is in line with the semantic function itself, which is to be able to process messages, organize the structure of language, and use it correctly. A person who studies semantics has different goals according to the needs of those who learn them. For a journalist the purpose of learning semantics is more practical just to find out the meaning of the word that will support the news that will be conveyed to the reading community (Pateda, 2010: 23).

    1. SEVEN TYPES OF SEMANTICS

      1/Conceptual meaning
Conceptual meaning means logical, cognitive, or denotative content. It isbased on two structural principles, which arecontractivenessand constituentstructures(in a scientific way). It is usually derived from definitions we find indictionaries and the appearance of these lexical items. We give these lexicalitems features (constituent structures) and eliminate other features whichare not present (contractiveness structures).- The conceptual meaning of a language can be studied in terms of
      contrastive feature,
depends on the given lexical field
      ,
so that (forexample) the meaning of the word
      woman
      could be specified as
      (+ human, +adult,- male),
      as distinct from,
      man
      , which could be defined
      (+ human, +adult,+ male),
man is incompatible with woman because of the distinctfeature which is (male feature)- The second principle, that of structure, is the principle by which largerlinguistic units are built up out of smaller units, (for example) in thissentence:
      {[(All) (men)] [(are)] [(mortal)]}

(We are able to analyze the sentence syntactically into a its constituentsparts)The semantic representation of conceptual meaning is governed by twolinguistic principles: that of contrast and that of arrangement. Theseprinciples are comparable to the paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationsobserved in phonological and syntactic analyses.
      2/Associative meaning
The associative meaning of an expression has to do with individual mentalunderstandings of the speaker. They, in turn, can be broken up into six sub-types:connotative, collocative, social, affective, reflected and thematic
      -social meaning
      (sometimes termed stylistic meaning)
which varies between age-groups, sex, social class and cultures. Dialect can be a good example. It is a piece of language that conveys about the social circumstances of itsuse. Pavement is used in British English and sidewalk in American English.Residence is formal and home is casual.
      C/ Affective meaning
Is what is communicated of the feeling or attitude of the speaker/writertoward what is referred to? (For example), by scaling our remarks accordingto politeness with the object of getting people to be quiet, we might sayeither:
1/ I’m terribly sorry to interrupt, but I wonder if you would be so kind as to loweryou voices a little2/ will you belt up
Factors such as intonation and voice-timber (tone of voice) are also importanthere
. And there are elements of language such as interjections, like (Aha! Yippee!),Whose main function is to express emotions.
      D/ Reflected meaning
What is communicated through association with another sense of the sameexpression. So it is the meaning that arises in cases of multiple conceptualmeaning, when one sense of a word forms part of our response to anothersense. In the church service, the synonymous expression (the comforter), it sounds

warm ‘comforting’ but in the religious context it means the strengthener orsupporter. i.e sense of the word seems to ‘rub off ’ on another sense.
      E/ Collocative meaning
Collocative meaning is the associated meaning a word acquires in line withthe meaning of words which tend to co-occur with it. Both pretty andhandsome mean good-looking but they differ in collocative meaning. Prettyoften co-occurs with girl, woman, flower, skirt, etc. Handsome oftencollocates with boy, man, car, overcoat, etc.
See (green ideas sleep furiously) to more understand the meaning of collocation.
      2/Thematic meaning
It concerns itself with how the order of words spoken affects the meaningthat is entailed. If we say:1/ I will do it tomorrow. In a neutral way.2/ tomorrow, I will do it. Showing a promise.4/ Mrs. Bessi Smith donated the first prize.5/ The first prize was donated by Mrs. Bessi Smith.Certainly these have different communicative value: the active sentenceseems to answer ‘
what did Mrs. Bessi Smith donate?
’, while the passivesentence seems to answer ‘
      who donated the first prize
      ’.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The appearance of connotation meanings is related to changes in meaning. This makes the meaning more widespread, narrower, and so on.
      Example positive connotation:
=>The lady who entered the store had an impressive slender build that I mistook her for a model.
      Example negative connotation:
      =>Skinny

    1. Hello ratih, yes i can.
